PhD Researcher in Mathematics
I am a PhD Researcher in Mathematics at the University of Manchester, currently awaiting my viva examination. I am originally from Rome, in Italy.
I work in group theory, modular representation theory and algebra in general.
How I Use Maths In My Job:
I study groups, which are a very general kind of object that shows up everywhere! Group theory allows you to look at symmetries of objects, at geometry, at particle physics, at networks… it is very powerful.
Mathematics is full of interdisciplinary tools: we are always trying to push everything we know to the limit, to obtain the best results we can… and sometimes a theorem from a completely different area can actually do the trick! Hence, while my main work is done with somewhat standard algebraic tools, I often use material from each of these areas:
- Fractions, Decimals & Percentages
- Ratio & Proportion
- Geometry & Measurement
Researcher in Pure Mathematics
If you did a documentary on my typical work day, it would look like the most boring thing ever. You’d see me sitting at a desk, staring at the ceiling, flipping through notes, scribbling stuff on a whiteboard that gets immediately erased most of the time, running a few lines of code to check something… and that is because most of the work happens inside my head! It takes 1000 mistakes to find the right proof for something, so you need to work through each of them to be successful.
There are, of course, other aspects to my job. I teach, I give and attend talks, I mark scripts, I have many meetings with various other researchers, I travel a lot…
My Typical Day
I wake up, I cycle to work, I have coffee and chat with my colleagues, then I check my emails and take care of any administrative stuff (if any!), and then... it's maths o'clock! I work on the task I have given myself for that day, until I am tired and it is time to go home (or to the pub).
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Proactive tall mathematician
What or who inspired you to follow your career?
I don't know. I don't remember a time when I didn't want to be a mathematician.
What's your favourite use for maths in everyday life?
What did you think about Maths when you were in school?
I have always loved maths
What did you want to be after you left school?
Exactly what I am right now! A researcher in mathematics.
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Somewhat. I was
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
I'd work in finance, which is my other great passion.

Crossed the Adriatic Sea on a boat overnight.
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
There's no reason not to wish for infinite wishes...
Tell us a joke.
Why didn't Newton invent group theory? Because he wasn't Abel.
